Sydenham Garden

Organisation information

Sydenham Garden is an award-winning charity providing nature conservation and creative opportunities for the well-being of local residents, as well as activities designed to help people with metal health problems and other significant illness to improve their quality of life.

Website information

In fitting with the garden theme, this large 40-page website employs a colour palette centred on earth tones, greens and reddish browns. Subtly graded background colours add to the visual richness, with translucent tinted blocks that highlight text while allowing the overlapping images beneath to remain visible.

The banner headings on each page consist of lush details taken from photographs of the garden, and these change with the page headings. The area above the primary navigation bar however remains clear and constant, and provides a space to highlight tools such as a button enabling donations to be made to the charity, as well as a site search facility, links to information on jobs and volunteering opportunities, and an option to render the text in high visibility, improving the website’s accessibility.

Sited within the banner on the homepage is an embedded video feature, showing a BBC programme on Sydenham Garden. Below this are the secondary navigation tools, including a link to sign up to the mailing list. The calendar featured here is used to highlight upcoming events, a month at a time. But should there be no main events planned for any particular month then the calendar can be temporarily replaced with an image from the website’s gallery page.
